Baking Sourdough Bread

  • Canberra Environment Centre Gungaderra Homestead Harrison Australia (map)

Learn how to make your own sourdough! This hands-on workshop will provide you with the skills and confidence to start making your own delicious sourdough at home. Sustainability and Life skills trainer Dianna Trudgian will be explaining the science behind bread making as well as demonstrating the key stages of making sourdough. This is a hands-on workshop where you’ll get to experience activating and maintaining the starter, as well as kneading and scoring the bread. During the course of this workshop, you’ll create a sourdough loaf to take home and cook. There will also be a demonstration of the baking process and a freshly baked loaf for participants to taste test.

The price includes all ingredients, notes, tea/coffee, and a take-home sourdough loaf to bake at home, as well as a sourdough starter to get you on your way.

You do need to bring any materials for this workshop. Please bring 1 x mixing bowl, 1 cup measuring cup, 1 tea towel, 1 x large sterilised jar, 1 tsp measuring spoon, 1 dessert spoon or fork.

Please sterilise the jars; you can do this by following these steps:

Sterilising Jars: Jars and lids should be sterilised before adding any live culture or food for fermentation. An easy way to sterilise jars and lids is as follows: 1. Fill a sink with hot soapy water. 2. Use a bottle brush or cloth to clean out the jar and lid. 3. Rinse the jar with hot water and leave to drain upside down. 4. Load jars and lids onto a tray and place into an oven at 100oC. 5. Heat the jars in the oven for 20 minutes. 6. Remove from the oven. Immediately place the lid on top and seal. Leave to cool to room temperature before use.
