POTTING BENCH BUILDING

  • Canberra Environment Centre Harrison, ACT, 2914 Australia (map)

Join us to build a potting bench out of pallets!

Learn how to use basic hand tools and watch demonstrations of basic power tool use in the building process.

This is an opportunity to get familiar with basic DIY building methods, salvaging materials and gain confidence using tools.

By the end of the workshop we will have built a fully functioning potting bench for the Gungaderra Community Garden

Femme run and queer friendly, this is a space for everyone but especially those who may not normally feel the most comfortable in a workshop setting.

We will be outdoors, down in the garden and there will be lots of opportunities to get involved.

Facilitator

Suze Greig (she/her) is a DIY enthusiast who believes in the importance of practical knowledge and access to tools, empowering individuals and communities to become more self-sufficient, resilient and financially independent.

During Melbourne’s 2020 lockdowns, Suze began building coffee tables and raised veggie beds from old wooden pallets. She is now constructing her own tiny house on a trailer using reclaimed materials. Her skills have been shaped by community-run workshops, helping her dad with renovations, and many deep dives down internet rabbit holes.

While she currently works as a disability support worker, Suze has previously worked as a teacher and bike mechanic, and has volunteered in and led grassroots cycling and bike maintenance workshops for marginalised genders.

She hopes to use her experience to empower others, particularly those often excluded from DIY spaces, to build confidence in repairing and creating their own household items, and in reusing old or second-hand materials.
