The ACT Government is preparing to electrify Canberra and transition away from the use of fossil fuel energy by 2045. We already lead the country in 100% renewable electricity supply, with the next step to electrify our homes, businesses and transport.

More than 40% of the ACT’s greenhouse gas emissions come from private vehicle use. Switching from a petrol or diesel car to a zero emissions vehicle (ZEV) is a great way to save money on your vehicle running costs and help the ACT meet our 2045 net zero emissions target.

We can lower how much greenhouse gas is released into the atmosphere by reducing our household and business energy usage, with the benefit of smaller monthly bills!

Household solar power is increasingly popular in Australia thanks to our sunny climate (Australia provides more solar radiation per square km than anywhere else on the planet) and the fact that most Australian dwellings are stand-alone with large rooftops suitable for photovoltaic (PV) systems. The economic returns are also substantial. Solar PV systems are an extremely effective way to reduce electricity bills in an energy market that exhibits some of the highest residential electricity prices in the world.
There are also four operational solar farms in the ACT:
- Majura Community Energy Project
- Williamsdale Solar & Battery Storage

Around 95% of ACT’s renewable power is generated by wind farms in New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia where wind power generation is better suited, including:
Capital Wind Farm near Lake George (NSW) has 67 wind turbines and generates enough renewable energy to power approximately 69,700 homes each year.
Sapphire Wind Farm in New England (NSW) has 75 wind turbines and is helping the ACT Government meet its target of 100% renewables in 2020 by providing a long term power purchase agreement.
Berrybank Stage 2 Wind Farm on the Western Plains (VIC) has 26 wind turbines over 5000 hectares.
Hornsdale Wind Farm in Jamestown (SA) has 99 wind turbines and provides renewable energy locally and to the national grid.
