Our vibrant environmental education centre at Gungaderra Homestead includes a community garden, bicycle repair shed, kitchen and teaching facilities for events focusing on practical, household, sustainable living topics. We actively invite and support other community-based environmental organisations to utilise the facilities at  as well.

Our Organisation

Actively embracing partnerships and collaborations helps us meet our community’s changing needs and allows us to continue building our excellent reputation in the Canberra region as educational leaders in the environmental sustainability space. We are super thankful for our amazing staff and volunteers who keep this place running with unique initiatives, and are supported by our generous community-minded and forward-thinking donors and sponsors.

Our Outreach

We reach a wide variety of people and organisations interested in sustainable living through our hand-on workshops, monthly second-hand bike sales, free weekly community gardening sessions, online webinars, free resources (podcasts, videos), social media and phone advice.

Our History

Canberra Environment Centre is the oldest environmental organisation in the Australian Capital Territory. It formed in 1974 as an umbrella group to represent and provide services for other environment or environment-related groups. In 2005, it changed its trading name to Canberra Environment Centre (formerly the Canberra and South East Region Environment Centre) to better reflect the direction of the environment movement and the organisation’s work in the community.
