GROWING HERBS & VEGGIES FROM SEED

  • Canberra Environment Centre Otway Street (via Mapleton Ave) Harrison, ACT, 2914 Australia (map)

Growing Herbs and Veggies From Seed

Growing herbs and veggies from seed is cheaper than buying seedlings, fun, educational, and rewarding. It also means you get to try out unusual and rare varieties which you may not be able to get in seedling form! And you can save seeds with confidence knowing that you have grown from open-pollinated, organic seedstock.

This 2 hour workshop with Arian from Canberra Seed Savers gives an introduction to raising some popular seasonal herbs and vegetables from seed. We'll look at what conditions seeds need to turn into healthy seedlings that produce yummy food for you. We'll talk about potting mix and garden position, microclimates and protecting baby seedlings, how to sow different types of seeds, watering and fertilising and you'll have a go at planting your own seeds to take home (seeds depend on the season).

With this introductory, hands-on workshop, you’ll leave feeling more confident about growing veggies, herbs and other plants from seed at home. Learn the basics of:

  • When to grow different veggies and herbs in the Canberra region

  • Selecting the right seeds for your garden

  • Preparing a seed raising mix

  • Sowing different types of seeds correctly

  • How to nurture, protect and care for young seedlings.

You’ll plant and take home a pot of seasonally appropriate seeds to give it a go!

About the Facilitator

Canberra Seed Savers are a network of urban food growers and local farmers working cooperatively to protect our abundant, common heritage of open-pollinated food seeds. They swap and share seeds, learn and teach about seed growing and saving, and together build a resilient community seed sharing network – a ‘living seed bank’. Canberra Seed Savers welcome you to join us and be part of the local network of seed savers, growers and guardians. Seed saving is for everyone.
