Farewell from Fiona Veikkanen

Fiona in the Gungaderra Community Garden

Dear CEC Community,

It’s been my pleasure to be a part of this diverse and vibrant community for over three years now, and I will miss being such a close part of it.

I’m finishing up in my role of executive director on the 17th July 2025.

I am so proud of everything we have achieved together at CEC during this time – including establishing a new community garden and The Recyclery Community Bike Repair Shed at Gungaderra Homestead and releasing two new seasons of the Local Environment Heroes Podcast. I have particularly enjoyed meeting incredible people who are taking action on climate and environment issues with passion, perseverance and creativity.

I want to extend my deepest thanks to the whole CEC committee, and particularly Mia Swainson, Julie Boulton and Annalisa Dietrich who have provided extra ongoing support, expertise and encouragement. Enormous thanks to the CEC team, both staff and volunteers who tirelessly show up to make a difference for our community – I could not have done it without you!

I’m as passionate as ever about practical climate education, and the role of community in providing creative solutions to the challenges of climate change. I will be stepping over to the role of Education Director at Canberra Potters Society, and hope to catch up with you ‘around’ soon.

With my warm thanks and see you soon,
Fiona Veikkanen
