Garden Update - April
Winter seedlings! (featuring our new project support officer, Zali)
Prep for winter crops is well and truly underway. After our first lot of seedlings were completely wiped out by a garden foe, we’ve started again, planting diversely and leaving some of our older crops in place to protect the new ones while they establish themselves. The last of the tomatoes are well overdue to be snipped off at the stump so their roots can decompose and feed our soil.
During the Easter school holidays, we hosted a sensory garden program for kids with YWCA in Dickson near the WISE Garden & Stepping Stone Cafe. It’s such a beautiful space, and we were grateful to contribute.
Paper daisies and lamb’s ear went into the planters, along with pineapple sage and cinnamon myrtle. Everyone had a great time planting and especially enjoyed watering afterwards.
We even had time to taste and plant a full tray of spigarello broccoli in the WISE Garden, with some of the residents guiding us on where it would grow best.
The program was lots of fun, and we can’t wait to work with YWCA on more programs.
Back in the garden after the holidays, we’ve been planting lots of winter seedlings from Tiny Farm Cbr. So far, they’ve survived moths, slaters and slugs. Fingers and toes crossed they spare us some veg to harvest. All up, we planted cabbage, chives, joi choi, broccoli, kale and cauliflower.
Our garlic is popping up, along with our snow peas, which we’re excited to see cover the trellis again like they did in spring.
Garden drop-ins are every Thursday from 9:30 - 11am, so as always, come along and get your hands in the soil!
