Garden Update - March
Frog pond from scratch in 3 hours!
The highlight of the past month has been a wonderful new addition to the community garden, our frog pond! A huge thank you to Anke Maria from Frogwatch at the Ginninderra Catchment Group for facilitating such an engaging workshop and sharing her extensive knowledge of local frogs and their habitats.
Belconnen Garden Club
We’re also incredibly grateful to everyone who signed up and attended. The collaboration on the day was fantastic, and it truly felt like a community effort. We hope your frog-friendly plants are thriving in their new homes. This workshop was made possible thanks to the generous support of the Hall Rotary Group, and we sincerely thank them for their funding.
In the garden this month, we’ve been busy planting a variety of seeds, including carrots, silverbeet, peas, and a fresh crop of garlic. We also planted red cabbage, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts. Unfortunately, most were devoured by an unidentified garden foe. Still, we will keep going. It is all part of the gardener’s endless struggle. We are looking forward to receiving a new seedling box from Tiny Farm Cbr to replace some of what was lost, while we continue experimenting with permaculture tips and tricks to outsmart the critters.
We also recently hosted the Belconnen Garden Club for morning tea and a tour of the garden. They had a lovely time exploring the homestead and wandering through the space. Members were especially impressed by our deep red cosmos flowers, wicking beds, and greenhouse. It was wonderful to share our space with more people who see the importance of connecting through gardening socially and how this benefits surrounding communities.
As always, you are warmly invited to join us. We meet every Thursday from 9:30 to 11:00, so if you are looking for fresh local produce, good company, and perhaps a chance to get your hands in the soil, only if you want to, please come along and say hello. There is no pressure to stay for the full session, just drop in for whatever
feels right for you.
