Recyclery Update — June

Cooking up a storm at our Reborn to Ride BBQ

Paul on the decks

We had a very cute furry friend at our BBQ

The Recyclery started the month with a memorable community BBQ. After a morning of busy bike sales, we fired up the grill, chucked on a few snags (yes, we had some vego options too), and Paul, a volunteer-turned-vinyl-record-DJ, started hammering the tunes. It was an absolutely fantastic event!

We enjoyed seeing familiar faces, and meeting new ones too. As an organisation, we love giving back to our volunteers and supporters; without you, we would not be able to run as we do!

This month, The Recyclery started a 6-week bike service course. This is ran by our community mechanic, Cohen. Cohen has been incredibly dedicated in sharing his skills, we love his commitment to making the course accessible and digestable to those participating. So far, the course participants have picked out a project bike, learnt how to change tires, assess the drivetrain, and most favourably, carry out wheel truing and hub overhauls.

However, with this, we do bring sad news. In June, we will be saying goodbye to Cohen. Cohen has been working with us since september. He has been an invaluble member of our team, and we whole-heartedly appreciate the effort he has put into giving back to the Canberra bike community. Cohen will be leaving in a few weeks, so catch him at our weekly Bike Kitchen sessions before he runs off to Melbourne!

If you would like to learn some handy bike mech skills, our mechanics will be holding a workshop at Diversity Hub, Kambah. Come learn how to change a tube and do a basic safety check of your bicycle. All are welcome! It’s free and will be on 13 June 10-12pm. If you have any questions or want to register your interest, please email bikeworkshops@canberraenvironment.org

With that, we would love to introduce you to our newest team member, Duncan! Duncan is joining us as a community bike mechanic, and fun fact - he also runs See Change’s E-Bike Library. Keep an eye out for his iconic khaki coveralls, and make sure to say hello!

As we round off May, we hope to see our Recyclery community at one last event. On 31 May, please join Oscar’s ride to save queer lives. Oscar, a 21-year-old ANU student, has challenged himself to peddle 2,000km this month. He is doing this in support of youth queer mental health. How incredible! Oscar had an original goal of $3,000, and has raised over double so far! This sunday, he will finish the 2,000km journey through a community group ride.

One last update - our Bike Kitchen hours will be changing to accomodate for the colder weather. Starting June, the sessions will now run from 3-6pm every thursday and friday.

I’m looking forward to seeing everyone around this June!
