Canberra Environment Centre Farewells Executive Director
The Canberra Environment Centre is bidding farewell Fiona Veikkanen, our Executive Director this July, marking the end of a transformative chapter for the organisation. Fiona’s proactive leadership, relationship building and deep commitment to sustainable living has left an indelible mark on the Centre and the broader Canberra community.
Under her guidance, the CEC successfully relocated to Gungaderra Homestead, securing funding and launching the new Recyclery Workshop. Her passion for sustainability shone through in the Centre’s podcast, which she co-hosted for seasons two and three, and in the vibrant workshops and events that engaged hundreds across the region.
Her tenure saw a significant expansion in funding, including partnerships with Transport Canberra and City Services, ACTEW AGL, and community garden grants. She also played a key role in scoping a major behavioural insights partnership.
Beyond programs and funding, she fostered strong relationships with environmental NGOs, ACT Government officials, and Ministers, while maturing the Centre’s governance and administration. Her inclusive approach to onboarding new team members, especially at Gungaderra, helped build a cohesive and passionate team.
The CEC community thanks her for her inspiring leadership and wishes her all the best in her next chapter.
