Garden Update — June
We have been busy sewing lots of seeds before the depths of winter take over. Our nasturtium still hasn’t even been hit with frost yet!? Seedlings have been thriving in the greenhouse under the lovely CBR winter sun. Coriander seedlings went out, we planted the rest of the garlic we saved from last season, and scattered an array of old mixed-up seeds around with the attitude of “if they sprout, great, if they don’t, that’s fine too.”
Leaf tower teapot!
Some lovely clinicians from Headspace visited our garden to scope out what we have so they can recommend it to their clients. They helped mulch some old celery plants and planted snow peas under the last trellis. They also went home with a bag each of Sun Chokes (Jerusalem Artichokes), plus a recipe for lacto fermentation or directions to roast them like a potato (easy).
Come to think of it, everyone who stepped foot on Gungaderra Homestead that day took home some Sun Chokes. Reluctantly. That old recipe from a valued volunteer at the UC Community Garden on lacto fermenting really got a workout. Our director Jen even managed to squeeze them into a dahl.
Huge dopamine hit for everyone who got their paws deep in the soil and uncovered vegetable rewards. We love it.
We were also proud recipients of a special leaf tower shaped like a teapot from the ACT Gov Healthy Waterways project. If you’re nearby and have been collecting leaves from your deciduous trees, bring them to our leaf tower. We want your leaves!!
The Gungaderra Community Garden was featured in LOCCAL’s (Local Community Compost Alliance- Australia) International Compost Awareness Week Webinar with a spotlight on our small but mighty community composting hub. Big thank you to Zali for featuring in the video and Bianca for sprooking CEC at the webinar. It was wonderful hearing about different communities composting initiatives and getting new ideas for how we can expand our own.
