One Action You Can Take — June

Your one action this month:

Take a walk in nature and, if you spot something unusual or interesting, upload a photo to NatureMapr. Your curiosity could help protect Canberra’s bushland, waterways, and wildlife.

One Action: Take a Walk for Nature

Sometimes, protecting Canberra’s environment can be as simple as going for a walk.

Local ecologist Dr Michael Mulvaney (and May’s Impact Hour speaker) says we can all play an important role in spotting environmental threats early, especially new pests and invasive weeds.

“Take a walk in Canberra’s nature, and if you see something unusual – a weed, aphids, or a beetle you haven’t seen before – upload it to (the app) NatureMapr. If we see it early, we can often get it under control within a couple of hours.”

Early detection can make an enormous difference. A pest or invasive species spotted quickly may be eradicated before it spreads and causes serious damage to local ecosystems. And you don’t need to be an expert to help.

“We’ve had around 30 new species discovered in Canberra, and most of those were found by people who didn’t realise what they were photographing.”
