Talk to six people who you think are not convinced about taking climate action. Engage with them respectfully, and make an effort to share the values of climate hope.

It is important to speak with those around you about climate change, even if their opinion is different to yours.

Professor Mark Howden AC believes in always putting respect at the forefront of climate discussions.

This was Mark’s concluding thought as the speaker of Impact Hour’s June edition.

“Talk to six people about climate change - six people who you think probably are not convinced or are reticent about taking climate action. Engage with them respectfully and try to find some way to meet both sets of values, and to find a way to get them to recognise the things that you find important and vice versa”

As an environmentally-focused NGO, we strive to support outlets and programs that positively influence climate action. However, we cannot forget the impact of casual conversations — I know that I definitely overlook this at times. We need to be proactive in ensuring that climate change discussions are not trivialised and are accessible to everyone.

So, get out there. Talk to your family, your friends, the people you work with. Remember, everyone has different opinions and come from all sorts of backgrounds. However, what you can do to make a difference, is to engage respectfully and find a way to meet differing values.
