Director’s Note: Spring into Action
Spring is in the air – but technically, the season doesn’t begin until after the spring equinox, which usually falls between the 20th and 23rd of September. Once the balance tips and daylight begins to stretch longer than night, our gardens and landscapes respond with new energy, and so can we.
This month is a wonderful time to get planting. In Canberra’s cool climate, you can pop into the soil: asparagus, beetroot, carrots, celery, melons, parsnips, peas, potatoes, radish, silverbeet, snow peas, turnips, and zucchini. Whether you’re tending a large patch or a balcony garden, now is the moment to sow the seeds of a delicious spring harvest. For extra inspiration, come and join us on one of our Thursday morning community garden sessions at Gungaderra - there’s one happening now, as I type this note – and we’re always happy to welcome new faces.
At CEC, we’re also sowing seeds of connection and creativity through our Springtime events. Come along to our clothes swap, join the home soil tour, learn the art of tea blending, or discover the beauty of eco-printing on silk. You’ll find the details on our ‘events’ page.
This weekend, you’ll also find us out and about. Three of our staff – Laura, Tina and I – will be at Ginninderry’s Inspire Festival (as will Gina Chick and Dr Karl), an event that’s all about art, nature, and sustainability. Meanwhile, our monthly Saturday bike sale will be running at Gungaderra Homestead from 10-12pm. Come and say hi to Ying, and maybe find yourself some (reborn) wheels to ride during the upcoming t-shirt months.
Here’s to a season of growth, renewal, and community.
With warmest wishes,
Jennifer.
