Recyclery Update — July
This month, we recieved our most unique donation of them all… an e-trike!
In June, we saw the conclusion of our 6-week bike service course. As a participant myself, it was bittersweet to see it end, and as a Recyclery employee, it was sad to see Cohen wrap up his final duties as our community bike mechanic.
The Recyclery service course is a program that I would recommend to those looking to build confidence and knowledge around bike mechanics. It upgraded my previous skills, which were limited to changing and patching a tyre tube, to now being able to completely take a bicycle apart and build it back up. We will be running our next course in August. Although the format of this one is still under construction. It will also be run by a new Recyclery face - Duncan!
However, fear not! It will still be catered to those with base-level beginner skills. Spots for the course are filling up quickly! So, if you would like to be a part of the August service course, click the button above to be redirected to an EOI form. If you have any further questions that the form leaves unanswered, please reach out to hello@canberraenvironment.org
At The Recyclery, we have been ecstatic at the number of young people looking to get involved and learn more about bike mechanics. It is incredible to see that bike culture is still alive and growing amongst Canberra youth. However, with this, we would like to inform our community of The Recyclery’s policy on kids at the workshop. Kids of all ages are more than welcome if they are accompanied by a supervising adult. Minors aged 15+ can attend workshops unaccompanied once a permission form has been filled out by a parent or guardian. If you would like this form, physical copies are found down at The Recyclery. Unfortunately, we do not provide or accept digital versions of the permission slip.
If you have kept a close eye on our website, you may have noticed a few changes. One of which is a brand new FAQ page! We love hearing from our community, and we recognise that there are a few questions about The Recyclery that are commonly asked. So, if you are curious and want to read a quick know-all on us, check out this page.

On June 10th, the Conservation Council announced the winners of the annual ACT Environment Awards. The Recyclery received Highly Commended for the Working Together Award. This award celebrates groups that focus on community-building and have made significant environmental change in the last 12 months. Click here to read more about the winners.
For those who haven’t been to the workshop in a while, our manager, Geordie, has been very busy with a brand new workshop fit-out. How cool! The aesthetics in The Recyclery have never been better.
Geordie and Murray giving Cohen his farewell gift
On June 18th, we had our monthly Recyclery and Canberra Environment Centre staff potluck! From Nepalese curries to Geordie’s cucumber salad, our hearts were full and our bellies even more so! The lunch was also an opportunity to properly farewell Cohen. We wish him all the best down in Melbourne.
Next month, The Recyclery will be lining up a few exciting events. Our main one is the social ride on July 11th. This is our very first one of 2026! Join Bianca & me for a gravel ride around Mt Majura & Mt Ainslie on Ngunnawal Ngambri Country. It will be approximately 15km with 197m elevation gain, and should take 1.5 hours to complete. Social pace welcome! The ride will be on undulating gravelly surfaces and is recommended for touring, gravel or mountain bikes. Unfortunately, it is not suitable for commuter or road bikes. After the ride, we will head to Gang Gang for a cuppa!
See ya ‘round next month!
