Q&A with Tina Gopalan
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and what brought you to the Canberra Environment Centre?
Hi! I’m Tina, a biologist and science communicator with a background in ecology, taxonomy and bushfire research. I’m passionate about helping people form meaningful connections with the natural world🌱 I’ve been involved at the Canberra Environment Centre since 2022 and am drawn to the opportunity to work directly with community members, supporting hands-on learning, empowering sustainable choices, and helping people understand the biodiversity right here in the ACT. I love bridging science and everyday life, so the CEC feels like the perfect place to bring those strengths together.
What’s your role here, and what kind of projects will you be working on?
I’m a Project Officer at the CEC, which means I help organise workshops, events and programs that support sustainable living. I write grant proposals, work with community organisations and volunteers, and help produce the resources and communications that keep everything running. Some of the projects I’ll be working on also include improvements to our internal workflows like building small digital systems that help the team operate smoothly. Ultimately, my role is all about enabling the community to access practical knowledge and feel empowered to take action💪🌏
What’s one fun or surprising fact about you that most people don’t know?
I once hand-delivered Eucalyptus foliage for greater gliders as part of my honours research (they’re very picky with food but cute and fluffy nocturnal marsupials)! My study was also featured on The Project!
Do you have a favourite local spot in Canberra to connect with nature?
Black Mountain is my go-to place. It is such a rewarding mix of wildflowers, birdlife and quiet trails. It’s one of the few places where you can feel completely immersed in bushland while still being right in the city.
What does “living sustainably” mean to you personally?
For me, living sustainably is about making thoughtful choices that recognise our connection to the land and the species we share it with. It doesn’t have to be perfect, it’s about being aware, being curious, and doing what you can within your capacity. Small habits, community action and informed decisions all add up, especially when we make them together.
What’s one easy sustainability tip you’d share with the community?
Swapping single use items like coffee cups, shopping bags, water bottles or cutlery for reusable alternatives is one of the simplest ways to cut down on everyday waste. Keep a small “reusables kit” in your bag or car so it’s always on hand. It’s low-effort, cost-effective, and makes a noticeable impact over time.
Do you have any final remarks you’d like to share with the community?
If you see me at an event or workshop, please come say hello👋! I love hearing people’s stories and learning about what sustainability looks like in their lives. Together, we can build a more connected, informed and environmentally resilient Canberra.
